Ms. Elbe was born in Denmark and was one of the first known recipients of a gender reassignment surgery. She went through 5 very risky and experimental surgeries over 2 years but died in Berlin after her body rejected the uterus they were attempting to transplant into her.
The bestselling novel The Danish Girl by David Eberschoff was published in 2000 and has been translated into many languages. A film version is currently being developed with actor Eddie Redmayne slotted to play Lili.
I'm sure a lot of people out there are appalled by such a thing. I feel if you're not happy in your own skin, you just need to find yourself, even if who you find is of a different gender.
