Anna Atkins
(1799 - 1871)
Ms, Atkins was a botanist and is considered the first female photographer. She is thought to be the first to publish a book using photograms as illustrations, a type of image created using light and special paper.
The images are also quite beautiful.

Those are some considerable achievements and I've never even heard of her. Thank you for enlightening me.

The book she published was hand-written - can you imagine?
DeleteVery interesting! I'd never heard of her either but the image you posted is cool.
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time picking which image to use on my post! They were all so pretty!
DeleteThe image is beautiful! I love your theme for the challenge.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was just took a brief pity-party moment of my own to come up with a theme I really enjoyed researching.
DeleteThis is such a great theme for the A-to-Z Challenge! As a female biologist myself, Anna Atkins is certainly inspirational. Nice post :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Biology is an interesting field.
DeleteI was also interested in her prints - this form of photography must be a fore-runner of blueprints. The colors are beautiful!
I love all the effort at cataloguing the incredible contributions women have made to science (among other things, of course!) over the years. Great post!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see ladies making such contributions back in a time when women didn't usually get the educational opportunities that men did.
DeleteIt's cool how Anna Atkins merged her experience as a botanist with her photography work. I'm pretty much unfamiliar with her so it's nice to read this bit about her on your blog!

Thanks! She was just recently on a Google Doodle, which is how I found her! I could have written a LOT more about her, but I tired to keep the bio brief.
DeleteI've never heard of a photogram before. It truly is lovely. Interesting choice for A! Happy a-zing...
